What is a Heat Pump?

A heat pump extracts ambient heat energy from the ground, the air, or a body of water, which is used to heat a refrigerant gas. The gas is then compressed, which further increases its temperature, more suitable for space heating and hot water production. The heated water is then circulated through your radiators, underfloor heating or hot water cylinder for use, in the same way as conventional boilers operate.

There is a small proportion of electrical energy required to run the heat pump; the remaining energy is carbon free, renewable and sustainable. This renewable source of heat can be used to create warm air or water for space and central heating, as well as hot water for both central heating and domestic hot water supply or even swimming pools and commercial applications.

This makes heat pumps very effective and up to 500% efficient, meaning for every 1 unit of electricity you need to put in, you’ll get the equivalent of 5 units of heat back.
